Cancer Fraud - The Latest Evil Scam ---------------------------------------------------- Don't be a victim of "cancer fraud." There are scammers out there who will take advantage of your good will and kind heart. Scammers are always looking for ways to con you out of your money. Sometimes it comes from what seems to be a legitimate cancer victim, who through publicity in the community raises funds for a disease they don't have! The goal of their scam is to get money and sometimes just publicity. Believe it or not.... some people actually fake cancer in themselves or even their children. They get sympathetic and well-meaning people to raise money for treatments that never are needed. And it's not that hard to fake documents that appear to uphold their claims. Their scam works because few people want to ask them to verify their cancer. After all, who wants to be branded as a heartless jerk? And it will be almost impossible for you to get another person's medical information from a doctor or a hospital, because laws prevent them from giving out that type of information. Here's another one; a twist on the Nigerian email scam. Have you gotten an email like this? The scammers send you an email claiming to be dying of some kind of cancer, and they beg for your help. They are in a foreign country and want to give away their millions, and since they have no heirs, they want the money to go to a good church or to be used to help children or needy. They will share part of their fortune if you will help them funnel their millions out of their country and into your bank account. They will ask for your bank account information so they can transfer the funds. Of course... DON"T DO IT!! If you do respond to their email they may want you to help with fees that need to be paid in order to get the money transferred. Again... DON"T DO IT!! I'm sure you have been touched in some way by cancer. Most people have had a relative or friend who has been a victim of some type of the disease, and you have wanted to help in some way. If you have questions about the "victim" and don't feel that you want to contribute to them directly you can always give a donation to The American Cancer Society or other local charity or hospice that might give aid to cancer victims.
